Your day starts as Melbourne is still waking up. Settle into your seat and watch the city grid give way to surf beaches and coastal highway. Our first major stop is Split Point Lighthouse at Aireys Inlet, where you can opt to climb inside the historic tower for panoramic coast views or take a peaceful walk around the cliffside trails before the crowds arrive.
From there, we trace the dramatic cliffside curves along the Great Ocean Road. We pause at the historic Memorial Arch, roll through central Lorne for lunch, and pull up at Kennett River to spot wild koalas sleeping in the gum trees. A quick stop at Marengo Reef gives us a view of the offshore Australian Fur Seal colony before we turn inland for a walk through the cool, mossy rainforest of Melba Gully.
As late afternoon approaches, we hit Shipwreck Coast right as the light turns golden. We descend into Loch Ard Gorge, step down the cliffside at Gibson Steps, and settle in at the Twelve Apostles for over an hour of golden light as the sun dips over the Southern Ocean. Arrive early at Aireys Inlet. Explore the coastal lookouts or take the optional guided lighthouse tour to climb inside the historic tower for 360-degree ocean views (add-on, subject to availability). Stop at the iconic Great Ocean Road gateway for photos before heading into Lorne, a small town right on the beach. Enjoy a sit-down lunch along Mountjoy Parade, stretch your legs, and soak in the coastal vibes.
Drive the cliffside curves to Kennett River to spot wild koalas in the eucalyptus trees. Afterward, stop at Marengo Beach to observe the fur seals on the outer reef.
